Achraf Hakimi Facing Weeks on the Sidelines After Painful Injury in PSG’s Defeat to Bayern Munich

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi is expected to be out for several weeks after suffering a serious ankle sprain during his team’s 2-1 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich, following a harsh challenge from Luis Díaz.

The Moroccan right-back was injured late in the first half after dispossessing Díaz near the touchline. As Hakimi surged forward, the Bayern winger, attempting to recover the ball, mistimed his tackle and landed heavily on Hakimi’s left leg. The PSG star immediately collapsed in pain and left the pitch in tears, prompting fears that he could miss the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which kicks off in Morocco on December 21.

Díaz, who had earlier scored twice for Bayern, was sent off just before half-time for the reckless challenge. After the match, the Colombian forward took to social media to apologize and wish Hakimi a “speedy recovery.”

Speaking to reporters, PSG manager Luis Enrique said the club would wait for medical tests before confirming the full extent of the injury. “We have to wait for the results tomorrow,” he said. “It’s football — a contact sport — but it’s unfortunate for Achraf.”

Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany also sent his best wishes to Hakimi after the match.

According to a report from RMC Sport, scans later revealed no fracture, but the 26-year-old suffered a severe sprain affecting the internal ligaments of his left ankle. The recovery period is expected to last six to eight weeks, ruling Hakimi out of PSG’s remaining matches in 2025 and putting his participation in AFCON in serious doubt.

PSG also confirmed in an official club statement that Hakimi will be sidelined for “several weeks.” The update included other key players:

  • Ousmane DembĂ©lĂ©, who won the 2025 Ballon d’Or, sustained a calf injury in the same game and will miss the Ligue 1 clash against Lyon as well as France’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Azerbaijan.
  • Nuno Mendes has a sprained left knee and will undergo treatment over the coming weeks.
  • Desire DouĂ© continues his rehabilitation after a right-thigh injury picked up against Lorient.

Despite the growing injury list, PSG remain top of Ligue 1, holding a narrow two-point lead over Marseille and Lens after 11 matches.

Hakimi’s absence, however, will be a major blow for both PSG and Morocco, as the defender faces a race against time to regain fitness before his country’s long-awaited home AFCON campaign begins.
