Africa Senior Athletics Championship Launched In Accra
The most anticipated African Senior Athletics Championship has been officially launched in Accra, Ghana, setting the stage for the biggest athletics sporting events in Africa.
The championship is scheduled to take place from 12 to 17 May 2026 at the iconic University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra. The Accra 2026 games are expected to attract top athletes across all the 54 member states in Africa.
Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, emphasized the broader significance of the event and the allocation of a lot of resources for the development of athletics in the country.
“Athletics remains a sport that can galvanize our nation and drive development if we make the right investments,” he said.
“It is not right that some regions in Ghana do not have proper running tracks for our budding athletes to train on. Accra 2026 must provide a platform for our young athletes to see what is possible. That is why we must create opportunities for them to witness what the senior athletes are doing. It will serve as a source of motivation,” he added.
After Cameroon hosted in 2023, Ghana is next, and this will be the country’s first time to host such a major championship after the successful 13th African Games.
