Nsawam Apedwa, Eastern Region, Ghana – The inaugural Obour Cycling Challenge came to a close on Sunday, November 24, 2024, with Erica Sedzro and Emmanuel Sesi being crowned the champions of the women’s 40km and men’s 100km events, respectively.

The highly anticipated championship, which drew athletes from across the country, featured three exciting events: Team Time Trial, Women’s 40km, and Men’s 100km.

Team Time Trial: Quick Steps Takes the Top Spot

The Team Time Trial was won by Quick Steps, with Team FCG and Obour Cycling Club securing second and third places, respectively.

Team Standings:
1. Quick Steps – 27:35.93 (average speed: 43.50km/hr)
2. Team FCG – 29:32.47
3. Obour Cycling Club – 30:27.98

Women’s 40km: Erica Sedzro Emerges Victorious

The women’s 40km event was a fiercely contested battle, with Erica Sedzro ultimately crossing the finish line first, ahead of her closest rival, Abigail Tetteh. Unfortunately, several competitors were unable to complete the grueling 40km course, which took riders from Nsawam-Apedwa to Suhum and back.

Men’s 100km: Emmanuel Sesi Takes the Top Honors

The men’s 100km event was an intense and closely contested affair, featuring a talented field of national athletes, former national champions, and experienced riders. In the end, Emmanuel Sesi emerged victorious, crossing the finish line a mere few seconds ahead of his closest competitors. The challenging 100km course took riders from Nsawam Apedwa to Suhum-Kyebi and back.

Post-Event Reactions: Organizers and Sponsors Commend the Success of the Event

The organizers of the Obour Cycling Challenge have promised an even more spectacular event in the coming years. The Ghana Cycling Federation’s Assistant Secretary praised the organizers for their efforts and assured the federation’s continued support for future events.

“The Ghana Cycling Federation will support this event to make it world-class; the publicity was great, and the athletes were thrilled on the route. This event will not only profit the athletes but the people in Nsawam as a whole. Sports help business in a community, so let’s all support him. Thank you,” General Secretary of the Ghana Cycling Federation, Shabban Mohammed, said.

“We are very happy that this event is being organised in Nsawwam Apedwa here, we, the drivers and mates associations, will support and make it a success,” one fan disclosed.
