A brief history of Accra Technical University.
Accra Technical University (ATU) is Ghana’s premier technical institution, with a history dating back to 1949. Initially established as a technical school, it was aimed at providing vocational and technical education to support the country’s industrialisation efforts during the colonial period.
Key Milestones:
1. Accra Technical was established in 1949 to focus on training skilled artisans and craftsmen in fields like carpentry, masonry, and electrical work.
2. In 1963, it was upgraded to Accra Polytechnic; following Ghana’s independence, the institution was restructured to meet the growing demand for middle-level technical personnel. It expanded its curriculum to include diploma-level programs in engineering, business, and applied arts.
3. In 1992, under PNDC Law 321, Accra Polytechnic became a tertiary institution, offering Higher National Diploma (HND) programs and professional certifications.
4. In 2007 Degree-Awarding Status: The institution began offering Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programs, transitioning toward a full-fledged degree-awarding technical institution.
5. In 2016 Conversion to Accra Technical University: Under the Technical Universities Act, 2016 (Act 922), Accra Polytechnic was upgraded to Accra Technical University.
6. In 2024, Accra Technical University is now offering master’s programs in some selected courses.
Accra Technical University is celebrating its 75 years of existence. They now have two campuses, one in the Accra, Greater Accra Region, and the Mpehoasem campus in the Eastern Region.
This marked a significant milestone, with the mandate to focus on applied research, innovation, and the provision of higher-level technical education.

• BTECH 28: First floor of the BTECH block, second class. It is written on top 028
• BTECH 29: First floor of BTECH block, third class.
• BTech Big Comp LAB: Computer Lab located at the BTech block, second floor, first room
• BTech Small Comp LAB: Computer Lab located at the BTech block, second floor, second room
Fashion Block: The fashion block is next to the lecturer’s office.
• FAS LT RM 1: First floor of the fashion block, first room.
• FAS LT 3: First floor of fashion block, third room.
• FAS Comp LAB: Computer Lab located in the fashion department, second floor.
• FAS Tailoring LAB: Third floor of Fashion Block, first room.

HCMI Block
The HCMI Block is located at the back of the ATU Auditorium and adjacent to the SRC Complex.
The Lecturer’s Block
The lecturers’ block is where most lecturers have permanent offices for their administrative work. That block is strictly by invitation and one special assignment.
NOTE: Their names are not written on the doors, so we use numbers to identify their offices. If you are going there to look for a lecturer, kindly ask for the room number and use that number to cross-check the various rooms.
The lecturer’s block is located between the Amphi Small and the Fashion Block. Its amongst the tallest buildings on the Accra Technical University campus in Accra.
CIBT Exam Venue
CIBT (Catholic Institute of Business and Technology) is a university located directly opposite the University of Ghana (UG) City Campus and adjacent to the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Hall. Students who write papers at this venue are advised to visit the place ahead of time to avoid being stranded on the exam day.
The Lecturers Bungalows
The lecturer’s bungalows are situated at the far end of the lecture halls. Located at the newly constructed Accra Technical University’s hospital in line with the ATU Lodge
The Old School Clinic
The old school’s clinic is situated just close to the solar panel generation station at the entrance of the main gate. Beside the Electrical Block (Great Hall)
Accra Technical University Medical Centre
The Accra Technical University Medical Centre is an ultra-modern facility that has more advanced equipment as compared to the old clinic. The medical centre is likely to be in operation soon.
The Old Hostel
The old hostel is situated at the Tudu market side of the campus. It’s the biggest hostel on the ATU campus and accommodates a huge number of students.
The New HostelÂ
The new hostel is among the ultra-modern buildings on the campus of Accra Technical University. Its architectural design makes the hostel one of the best in the country. Both the old and new hostels are located at the same place with just a walking distance separating them.
