Homemade Hot Sauce

The Ingredients Needed.

  • 2 garlic cloves, halved
  • 1/2 onion, roughly chopped
  • 3 tbsp crushed tomato
  • 1 tbsp wheat flour
  • 100 ml (1/2 cup) chicken or ham broth
  • 1 chili or cayenne pepper, whole or chopped (adjust for heat)
  • 1 splash of apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon hot paprika (or to taste)
  • A few drops of Tabasco (optional, for extra heat)
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions on how to prepare homemade hot sauce.

  1. Sauté the Garlic and Onion:
    • Heat a small pot with a layer of olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add the halved garlic, chopped onion, and chili or cayenne pepper. Sauté until fragrant and the onion softens.
  2. Prepare the Vinegar Mixture:
    • In a small glass, mix a splash of vinegar with hot paprika. Set aside.
  3. Cook the Tomato Base:
    • Turn off the heat briefly and stir in the vinegar-paprika mixture to combine with the garlic and onion.
    • Turn the heat back to low and add the crushed tomato. Stir well.
  4. Thicken the Sauce:
    • Sprinkle in the flour and stir for 2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste.
    • Gradually add the broth, stirring constantly to create a smooth sauce.
  5. Simmer:
    • Cook the sauce on medium-low heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.
  6. Blend the Sauce:
    • Remove the pot from heat and transfer the mixture to a blender. Blend until completely smooth.
  7. Adjust Heat (Optional):
    • For extra spice, add a few drops of Tabasco after blending and stir to combine.
