A step-by-step guide on how to prepare mashed potatoes recipe.
- Prepare the Potatoes:
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into medium-thick slices.
- Cook the Potatoes:
- Place the potato slices in a pot, sprinkle with a pinch of salt, and cover them with water. Ensure the water level is about 1–2 fingers above the potatoes.
- Bring the pot to a boil over high heat.
- Once boiling, uncover the pot and let the potatoes cook for an additional 10–15 minutes, or until they are tender.
- Drain and Dry:
- Test the potatoes with a fork to ensure they’re soft. Remove the pot from the heat and drain the water using a strainer.
- Return the drained potatoes to the pot and place them back on the stove over very low heat for a couple of minutes to remove excess moisture.
- Heat the Milk:
- While the potatoes are cooking, heat the milk in the microwave or on the stove. It’s important that the milk is very hot to keep the potatoes warm during preparation.
- Mash and Mix:
- Remove the pot of potatoes from the heat. Add a generous splash of olive oil and the hot milk.
- Mash the potatoes using a fork, spoon, or potato masher. Alternatively, pass them through a food mill for a smoother texture.
- Adjust the salt, olive oil, and milk to achieve your desired taste and consistency.
- Serve:
- Once the mashed potatoes are smooth and at your preferred thickness, they’re ready to serve!
