Joseph Commey Tops at the 3rd Boxing Ghana Awards
Joseph Commey, the UBO Africa Lightweight Champion and African Games Gold Medallist emerged as the standout figure at the 3rd Boxing Ghana Awards, held at the Idrowhyt Events Centre last Saturday. Known by his ring name, “Jaguar,” Commey was honoured with three prestigious accolades: Boxing Personality of the Year 2024, Best Elite Amateur Boxer, and Most Promising Boxer, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career.
The grand event, organized by Boxing Ghana, celebrated the achievements of distinguished individuals who have contributed immensely to the growth and success of Ghanaian boxing. It provided a platform to recognize athletes and stakeholders for their dedication to the sport.
Delivering remarks at the event, Mr Ben Nunoo Mensah, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), praised the organizers for their efforts in promoting boxing and urged them to sustain the initiative. He highlighted the importance of such events in motivating athletes, stating that they inspire boxers to aim higher and perform better.
“Boxing remains Ghana’s number one sport, consistently delivering medals and laurels on the international stage,” he noted. Mr. Nunoo Mensah further called for increased corporate support to ensure the continued success and growth of the Boxing Ghana Awards.
The special guest of honour, Nii Dr. Adotey Dzata I, former president of Ghana Kickboxing, emphasized the need for boxers to intensify their training as they step into the limelight as national icons. He encouraged the athletes to embrace their status as stars and work diligently to maintain their momentum.
Hon. Alfred Kotey Ashie, Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, also graced the occasion and commended the organizers for their commitment to recognizing excellence in boxing. He congratulated the winners and urged them to strive for even greater achievements, particularly by aspiring to win world titles and elevate Ghanaian boxing to unparalleled heights.
