REPORT: 2026 KWAHU MOUNTAIN MARATHON

The 2026 edition of the Kwahu Mountain Marathon marked a major success, standing out as one of the most well-organized races in its seven-year history. As the seventh edition of the event, it attracted top athletes and enthusiastic participants from across Ghana, reinforcing its growing reputation. This was the first time young athletes and corporate companies participated in a 4 km run, jog, or walk for exercise. The corporate walk also attracted top track athletes across the country.

The race commenced at approximately 7:10 a.m., with runners navigating a challenging but scenic route through the Nkawkaw township, the local market area, and into the demanding Kwahu hills. Participants passed key landmarks, including the prestigious Rock City Hotel, before turning back toward the Kwahu Traditional Council in Mpreaso, where the race concluded.

The competition featured two main events: the 21km and the 4km corporate run. The men’s race was particularly intense, highlighted by a thrilling head-to-head contest involving former Ghana half marathon record holder Arthur Ishmael and rising star Prosper Koomson. Prosper narrowly secured victory, finishing in 1 hour, 15 minutes, and 03 seconds, just milliseconds ahead of his closest competitor from the Ghana Armed Forces, Arthur Ishmael, who placed second in a time of 1 hour, 15 minutes, and 04 seconds, while Ayisi Godfred from Suhum also took third place in a time of 1 hour, 18 minutes, and 58 seconds.

“The preparation for the race was excellent. When I started the race, I slowed down and moved at the pace of Ishmael Arthur. I know he is my senior, but I have decided that if he does not win, I will win the race. He tested me during the final stage, and I also did not give up,” said Prosper Koomson after winning the 2026 Kwahu Mountain Marathon.

He further stated that this win has motivated him greatly to train more seriously for the upcoming races. “I want to win the next year’s event again,” he added.

“My preparation for the Kwahu Mountain Marathon was excellent. I have been participating since I was a civilian. The finishing surprised me, and I am confident it won’t happen again,” Ishmael Arthur disclosed.

He shared his experience over the past six years he has been competing in this marathon: “If you can compete in the Kwahu Mountain Marathon, then you can compete in all marathons,” he concluded.

In the women’s category, Portia Anaaba delivered an outstanding performance, winning the race in 1 hour, 32 minutes, and 52 seconds. She was followed by Christiana Asibi Mumuni in a time of 1 hour, 35 minutes, and 17 seconds, and Stephani Konlan placed third with a time of 1 hour, 37 minutes, and 03 seconds, who also put up impressive performances.

The officials from Ghana Athletics led a cool-down session with the athletes after the race at the Kwahu Traditional Council ceremonies grounds.

Dr. Edward Boahen thanked all the sponsors: ONGA, BEL AQUA, COWBELL, AND TWISCO and the Queen Mothers from the Kwahu municipalities. He appreciated his sponsors, and as Oliver Twist also says, “He asked for more companies to come and support the event in the coming years.”

“I thanked all the Queen Mothers who accepted this offer and came and graced this occasion. I know it was difficult, but you all made it here. I promised next year it will be bigger than this,” he concluded.

Beyond the race, the event incorporated cultural elements such as cooking competitions, where local women showcased their culinary skills. The presence of queen mothers added prestige, and winners received cash prizes, souvenirs, and certificates.

With strong volunteer support, effective police coordination, and minimal traffic disruptions, the marathon recorded smooth operations. Participation exceeded 100 athletes, making the 2026 Kwahu Mountain Marathon a truly memorable and successful event.
