UPDATE ON WITHHELD RESULTS OF CANDIDATES FOR THE WASSCE FOR SCHOOL CANDIDATES

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) released the provisional results of candidates who participated in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2024, on December 30, 2024. This year, a total of 460,611 candidates from 1,003 schools sat for the examination.

During the conduct of the examination, several cases of irregularities were recorded. These malpractices ranged from candidates bringing unauthorized materials into the examination halls, snapping and sharing examination questions on social media, distributing photocopied answers to fellow candidates, and instances where invigilators were found aiding candidates in the examination halls. Cases deemed to have criminal implications were reported to the police for further investigation and appropriate legal action, while those directly involving candidates were referred to the appropriate WAEC office for disciplinary measures.

Following thorough investigations into these malpractice cases, and upon approval by the Ghana Examinations Committee, the Council has taken the following actions:

  • Cancellation of subject results for 4,108 candidates who were found to have brought unauthorized materials into the examination hall.
  • Cancellation of entire results for 483 candidates who were caught in possession of mobile phones during the examination.
  • Withholding of subject results for 781 candidates pending further investigation.
  • Withholding of entire results for 209 candidates due to various suspected examination offences.
  • Withholding of subject results for candidates from 319 schools suspected of engaging in widespread collusion.

The decision to withhold results was based on reports from examiners who, during the marking of scripts, identified suspected instances of collusion and other examination irregularities. The affected candidates and schools will be duly informed about the next steps regarding their withheld results, and necessary actions will be taken in accordance with WAEC regulations.

WAEC remains committed to upholding the integrity of its examinations and ensuring that the credibility of the WASSCE is maintained. The Council urges all stakeholders, including students, teachers, parents, and school authorities, to uphold ethical examination practices to safeguard the credibility of educational assessments in the country.
