John Kofi Ansah Secures Chairmanship at GHALCA Elections
The 2025 Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) elections culminated in a decisive victory for John Kofi Ansah, who secured the chairmanship with an overwhelming 96 votes, defeating sports lawyer Isaac Wilberforce Koomson, who garnered 35 votes. The elections, held on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium, marked a significant milestone for the club welfare body as it embarks on a new chapter of leadership.
John Ansah, formerly the Vice Chairman of GHALCA, will now serve as chairman for the next four years. His triumph highlights the strong support he enjoys from stakeholders, reportedly bolstered by endorsements from Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku. Ansah’s campaign emphasized continuity and the enhancement of GHALCA’s role as a key advocate for the welfare of football clubs across the nation.
Despite a determined campaign advocating for reforms, Isaac Koomson, a former executive council member, fell short in his bid for leadership.
In a historic development, Phyllis Marku Moncar became the first woman elected as Vice-Chairperson of GHALCA. She secured a commanding 94 votes, defeating Nana Amankwah Kwakye, who received 34 votes. Marku’s election represents a progressive step forward for the association, reflecting an increased focus on inclusivity in leadership.
In other contested positions, Fred Tindan of GoldStars emerged as the Men’s Premier League representative with 26 votes, outpacing Joseph Nkoo of Asante Kotoko (18 votes) and Abdul Rahman Yakubu of Vision FC (14 votes).
Gabriel Godwin Kwao, unopposed for the Regional Football Association representative position, garnered 23 votes, with seven ballots rejected. Other unopposed winners included Patrick Martey Boye as Treasurer, Eric Opoku as Division One League representative, and ASP Naomi F. Abdulai as Women’s Premier League representative.
As the Kudjoe Fianoo-led administration concludes its term, the newly elected executives face the challenge of addressing pressing issues while advancing GHALCA’s mission. Stakeholders express optimism that Ansah’s leadership will usher in a period of stability and innovation, blending continuity with progress.
The overwhelming mandate given to Ansah and his team underscores a collective desire among stakeholders for stronger advocacy and sustained growth in Ghanaian football. The elections signal a new era for GHALCA, with high expectations for impactful leadership and strategic development.
