Ghana Athletics President Announces Plans for National Inter-School Championships to Develop Young Talent
Ghana Athletics President Bawah Fuseini has unveiled ambitious plans to establish a National Inter-Schools Championships, inspired by the overwhelming success of the recent Regional Super Zonal Competitions held in the Central and Ashanti Regions.
The announcement comes as a response to the exceptional performances witnessed during the highly competitive events in Cape Coast and Kumasi, where schools like Mfantsipim School and Prempeh College showcased their dominance in various track and field disciplines.
The Regional Super Zonals not only highlighted the depth of talent among Ghana’s young athletes but also sparked widespread calls for a national-level competition to nurture and elevate these emerging stars.
Recognizing the potential of such an initiative, Fuseini revealed that discussions are already in progress with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to bring the National Inter-School Championships to life. The event, which could be hosted in either Kumasi or Cape Coast, aims to create a unifying platform for the country’s top-performing schools.
“Imagine the excitement from the Ashanti Region and Cape Coast—if we bring all these athletes together for a National Inter-School Championship, the atmosphere will be incredible,” Fuseini told JoySports.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration with the GES, stating, “I have met with the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, and we are working towards organizing this event. The goal is to bring together the best-performing schools from the Super Zonal Competitions and create a pathway for them to compete at the African level.”
The proposed championship is expected to serve as a critical stepping stone for young Ghanaian athletes, offering them a platform to showcase their talents, gain national recognition, and prepare for future international competitions.
By fostering a competitive yet supportive environment, the National Inter-School Championships could play a pivotal role in identifying and developing the next generation of Ghanaian track and field stars, further solidifying the country’s reputation as a powerhouse in African athletics.
