USA Opted From Major Event at World Athletics Relays

The United States national track and field team has confirmed it will not send men’s or women’s 4×400m relay teams to the upcoming World Athletics Relays 2026, scheduled for May 2–3 in Gaborone.

According to officials, the decision comes down to the difficulty of assembling top-tier athletes at this stage of the season, along with the significant cost of sending teams that would not be at full strength. Rather than fielding weakened squads, the U.S. has opted to sit out the event entirely in these relays.

For fans, this announcement brings a measure of disappointment. It means there will be no highly anticipated men’s 4×400m showdown between the U.S. and Botswana national athletics team on home soil. The rivalry between the two nations has grown in intensity following their dramatic split victories at the 2024 Summer Olympics and the 2025 World Athletics Championships, where both sides showcased elite relay performances.

The World Relays serve as a key qualification pathway, acting as the primary route for teams aiming to secure places at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship 2026 and the 2027 World Athletics Championships, where the top 12 teams in each event earn automatic qualification.

Despite skipping the relays, U.S. officials remain confident. They believe their 4×400m teams will still qualify through world rankings, ensuring that when the major championships arrive, the United States will once again be among the contenders for relay dominance.
