Mr. Shaaban Mohammed, Secretary General of the Ghana Cycling Association, is confident that Ghana has the potential to be represented in cycling at the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games in the USA. In an exclusive interview with Yours Truly at the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Secretariat, where he serves as Operations Manager, Mr. Mohammed emphasised that with proper organization and planning, the nation can achieve this goal.

He revealed that there are advanced plans and support from a U.S. organisation that is preparing to train promising Ghanaian cyclists. Mr. Mohammed also highlighted the importance of Ghana bidding for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and effectively utilizing the sporting facilities constructed for the 2023 African Games.

He noted the significant benefits of hosting international events, pointing out that Ghana gained several positives from hosting the African Games. While acknowledging that the Commonwealth Games is a larger event, he expressed optimism that with proper organization, Ghana can successfully host this prestigious competition.

Mr. Mohammed also shared his expectations for the new Minister of Sports, stressing the importance of appointing someone with experience in sports, who has actively participated in the field and possesses strong leadership and managerial skills.

He expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the recent elections, stating that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party’s victory would ensure that the concerns and aspirations of the people are heard and addressed. He also reflected on the success of 2024, citing the significance of the Tour du Ghana and other youth and student competitions organized by the Cycling Association.

Looking ahead, Mr. Mohammed anticipates a busy year in 2025 as preparations intensify for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Olympic Games. He urged the incoming government to give more attention to sports like cycling, which offer numerous benefits for the nation.

Mr. Mohammed concluded by extending his best wishes for an eventful and successful New Year to all cyclists, cycling fans, and the executives and officials involved in the sport.
