The Black Galaxies’ hopes of securing a second consecutive African Nations Championship (CHAN) appearance came to a disappointing end after a 3-1 defeat to Nigeria at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, December 28, 2024.
The match, a decisive second leg in the CHAN qualifiers, saw Ghana’s aspirations undone by defensive lapses and missed opportunities, allowing the Super Eagles to dominate early and secure their place in the 2025 finals.
Nigeria took control from the outset, with Ismaila Sodiq capitalizing on a defensive error to open the scoring in the 19th minute. Just three minutes later, Nduka Junior doubled the advantage with a stunning strike that left Ghana’s goalkeeper helpless. The home side continued their relentless attack, and Isaac Saviour added a third goal in the 25th minute, putting the result beyond doubt before halftime.
Trailing 3-0, the Black Galaxies faced an uphill battle. Despite their efforts to regroup and find a response, they struggled to match Nigeria’s intensity in the first half. However, Ghana showed glimpses of improvement after the break, managing to score a consolation goal and create a few more chances, but it was too little, too late.
The result not only dashed Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for CHAN 2025 but also served as a measure of revenge for Nigeria, who had been eliminated by the Black Galaxies in the 2023 qualifiers.
For Ghana, this marks a bitter end to their campaign, highlighting areas that need urgent attention as they look to rebuild. With future tournaments on the horizon, the team will need to reflect on their shortcomings and focus on strengthening their squad to reclaim their status on the continental stage.
