The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has officially appointed Swiss coach Nora Häuptle as the new head coach of the Zambia Women’s National Team, commonly known as the Copper Queens, on a three-year contract. Häuptle’s arrival marks a significant step in Zambia’s ambition to sustain and enhance its impressive progress in women’s football.

Häuptle’s appointment comes after her tenure with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), where she served as head coach of the Black Queens. During her time in Ghana, Häuptle worked to rebuild the women’s national team, introducing a disciplined approach and tactical innovations aimed at rejuvenating the squad. Despite challenges, her leadership laid a foundation for the team’s future development. However, Häuptle opted not to renew her contract with the GFA, paving the way for her new role with the Copper Queens of Zambia.

FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga expressed his confidence in Häuptle’s abilities, emphasizing her qualifications and the vision she brings to the Zambian women’s football project. “We are excited to announce the appointment of Nora Häuptle as the new Zambia Women’s National Team coach. We have every reason to believe that she has the pedigree and profile that will take us to the next level,” Kamanga stated. His words underline FAZ’s belief that Häuptle’s international experience and proven track record will be instrumental in maintaining and advancing the Copper Queens’ upward trajectory.

The Copper Queens have made remarkable strides in recent years, transforming into one of Africa’s rising powerhouses in women’s football. Their accomplishments include winning bronze at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), a historic qualification for their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, and securing back-to-back Olympic qualifications. These achievements have raised the profile of Zambian women’s football and increased expectations for sustained success on the global stage.

Häuptle’s mandate is clear: to build on these milestones and take the Copper Queens to new heights. Known for her tactical expertise and ability to develop cohesive teams, Häuptle is expected to integrate her international coaching experience with the dynamic talent within Zambia’s ranks. Her approach is anticipated to focus on enhancing the team’s technical skills, improving their tactical understanding, and fostering a winning mentality.

Her appointment also signals FAZ’s commitment to investing in the women’s game, ensuring the Copper Queens remain competitive in Africa and beyond. Häuptle’s tenure will likely prioritise youth development, as Zambia’s football ecosystem continues to produce promising young players who can contribute to the national team’s long-term success.
