The Red Devils have a serious injury problem, but a very good group of young players are ready to aid.

Thankfully, Manchester United’s 99 problems this season did not include an injury crisis. Until it was.

The club experienced a series of setbacks in February following a dreadful training week in which Toby Collyer and Manuel Ugarte were pushed down, Leny Yoro and Christian Eriksen became unwell, and Lisandro Martinez sustained a season-ending injury against Crystal Palace.

Kobbie Mainoo missed a few weeks of action because of a muscle ailment, and star boy Amad Diallo was later declared out for the rest of the season because of an ankle injury.

The outbreak of injuries and illness led to United naming a substitutes bench for Sunday’s game against Tottenham that contained eight players with no senior experience at all.

But as Machiavelli famously said, one should never waste an opportunity offered by a good crisis, and the latest spate of injuries has opened up the chance for several of United’s crop of talented youngsters to make their mark for Ruben Amorim’s side.

The club’s youth system is doing well, but the main team is still struggling and is having its worst season since being relegated in 1974.

While the U21s are fourth in Premier League 2, United’s Under-18 team is second in its league and has made it to the FA Youth Cup quarterfinals.

In an attempt to emulate Manchester City and Chelsea’s success in that area, the club has significantly increased its activity in the transfer market for young players.
