The maiden edition of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Zone II U-18 and U-20 Championships will now be held in Accra, Ghana, instead of Dakar, Senegal.

The decision to relocate the championships was made by the Executive Committee of the regional athletic body due to logistical reasons.

Speaking on the development, Chief Tonobok Okowa, President of CAA Zone II, confirmed the move, stating:

“Yes, we initially agreed to stage the competition in Dakar, Senegal, but we had to move it to Accra due to logistical challenges.”

Chief Tonobok Okowa, who also serves as a Vice President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) and the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), expressed confidence in Ghana as an ideal alternative host.

“Last year, Ghana successfully hosted the CAA Zone II Senior Athletics Championship, which served as an Olympic Games qualifier. They were near-perfect hosts, and we are confident in their ability to deliver another outstanding event.”

New Host Venue & Event Dates

The University of Ghana Sports Complex in Legon, Accra, is expected to host the two-in-one competition, which will take place in May or June 2025.

Okowa emphasized that the event will serve as preparation for the African Youth Championships in July and an opportunity for young athletes to compete at an elite level.
