Lariba Sakat Breaks Own 5000m National Record in Stunning Performance
Ghana’s rising distance star, Lariba Sakat, has once again etched her name into the record books after delivering a remarkable performance at the prestigious 2026 Bryan Clay Invitational at Cougar Stadium in California, USA.
The talented athlete clocked an impressive 15:44.87 in the 5000m event, smashing her previous national record and reaffirming her status as one of Ghana’s most promising long-distance runners. Representing Iowa Western Community College, Lariba earned a spot in one of the most competitive track meets in the United States, and she made it count.
Reflecting on her race, Lariba admitted the challenge was intense. “This race was very tough and hot. Although my position was not good, I improved my time and managed to break my own national record again,” she told Richportal TV. Despite the difficult conditions, her determination saw her push through 12 and a half laps to achieve a historic result.
Her previous national record of 15:56.72 was set in November 2024 at the MKO Abiola Sports Stadium during the African Military Games in Nigeria. This latest performance not only lowers her personal best but also sets a new benchmark for Ghanaian athletics.

Even more impressive, her 15:44.87 finish has been recognized as both an Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) record and a historic mark in NJCAA competition.
Lariba didn’t stop there, she also competed in the 1500m, posting a strong time of 4:21.47, showcasing her versatility across middle- and long-distance events.
Although she described the race as surprising, the determined athlete has promised a stronger comeback. With her current trajectory, Lariba Sakat is not just breaking records, but she is redefining the future of Ghanaian distance running on the global stage.
