William Ezah: Organising Marathons in Ghana Is More Difficult Than Football

Organising a marathon in Ghana comes with enormous challenges, and according to experienced race director William Ezah, putting together a successful road race can be even more difficult than organising a football event.

Ezah, the Race Director of the Tampico Accra Inter City Marathon, highlighted the numerous responsibilities involved in staging a safe and successful marathon, particularly issues surrounding security, athlete safety, hydration and sponsorship.

Speaking to Athletics Notch Tv ahead of this year’s Tampico Accra Inter City Marathon, Ezah stressed that marathon organisers must carefully consider the welfare of thousands of participants throughout the race.

“Organising marathons in Ghana is very difficult, even more difficult than football,” Ezah emphasised, pointing to the extensive logistics required to close roads, manage traffic, secure the route, and provide adequate support for athletes.

According to the experienced race director, athlete safety remains one of the most important priorities. From security personnel along the route to medical support, hydration stations and other essential services, every aspect must be properly planned before the first athlete takes off.

Despite the challenges, Ezah is confident that the 2026 Tampico Accra Inter City Marathon will deliver a memorable experience for athletes, spectators and the wider sporting community.

He described this year’s edition as a massive event, expressing his belief that it could be the best marathon he has ever organised.

Ezah brings considerable experience to the event, having been involved in the organisation of several major road races in Ghana, including the Kwahu Mountain Marathon, Takoradi Marathon, Kushea Marathon and Accra Inter-City Marathon.

His experience across these events has given him valuable insight into the demands of organising road races and the importance of continuously improving race standards.

Launch Set for August 18

The official launch of the 2026 Tampico Accra Inter City Marathon is scheduled for Tuesday, 18 August 2026, where organisers are expected to provide more details about the race, including preparations, registration, participation, route, logistics and other activities surrounding the event.

The launch will also provide an opportunity for the organisers to outline their vision for this year’s competition and explain how they intend to make the event bigger and better.

Athletics Notch TV will bring the launch live to its audience, allowing athletics fans and supporters who cannot attend the ceremony to follow the proceedings.

With William Ezah promising a massive edition and putting strong emphasis on security, safety and athlete welfare, expectations are already high for what could become one of the major marathon events on Ghana’s 2026 athletics calendar.
